I wanted to speak today about leadership, and I feel that before, it’s best to bring clarity about what is a business, either online, internet business, or off-line. brick and mortar business.
The first question I always ask to my students when they want to take action on something is : what’s the purpose of this ?

That is my always starting point : what’s the purpose of a business :
People say most of the time : to make profit. I say NO.
Make that clear in your mind : the purpose of a business is to create and keep a customer, and THEN the profit comes from doing that in a cost-efficient way. Make a profit is the RESULT of creating and keeping customers.
So now, what is the measure of success of the business ?
It is the customer’s satisfaction.
And what is the measure of customer satisfaction ?
It’s repeat-business.
And last question is : what is the highest level of business success in terms of satisfying customers ?
It is that those customers recommend you to others people.

The majority of you, my friends and marketers, come along with that same big question : how do I get what I want, as it seems something’s stopping me to succeed all the time ?
We’ll see today 3 simple steps to put you in the process of INEVITABLY get what you want :
1-Know what you want, be conscious of what it is, define it.
I noticed often when I ask you « what do you really want ? »
That your answer is not saying really what you want, but want you think you want.
Some of you don’t even know what they want, thinking they know.
The typical examples are : I want money, and I want to be free. That’s why I gave this name to my blog . So : it does not tell me : what is money for you, who will you be , how will you feel when you have money, what will you do ?
What means being free to you ? Having more time, having freedom to buy what you want without counting, never stress again about the future, or simply be in peace in your mind ?
The answers to those questions define what it is that you want.
You need a define purpose to know where to start at to reach it.You cannot make a plan for a destination that you don’t know.
2-Find out what prevents you from getting it :
what is the attitude that attracts to you the result that’s not what you want.
We speak here of what is preventing you from taking action, when you made the decision to do what’s needed to succeed.
That’s a fear , which you have to find out. What are you avoiding ? Which pain is there in the task that you should be making now ?
3- Adopt an opposite attitude to the one that produces the opposite of what you want.
So You’ve found what is that stops you from taking action.
Now, instead of trying to find How can I avoid doing that painful task ? –ie avoid the pain- ask yourself :
If I don’t take action now, what will that ultimately cost me, and so what is the best that I can do to afford the price ?
May be the price of doing the task is more affordable for you, or another solution could be found ?
So, you effectively use the pain, the fear, and they will be your friends, they’ll serve you.

MLM Success Is Just One Breakthrough Away…
Too often, this industry is made out to be some sort of ‘mysterious‘, mystical business, that can only be built or comprehended after you buy a slew of E-books, courses, seminars, and attend thousands of conference calls – when the simple, fundamental reality is that not only is it simpler than you ever imagined, once you ‘get it’, it’s easier, too.
We all start off in our path to MLM Success with a straight, and narrow vision of living our dream lifestyle, driving the nice cars, giving our wealth away to charity, and firing our stupid boss (a LOT of reps in this industry are part time), but we get hung up on the slow growth, small paychecks, and the ‘magic’ that seems to surround success, not realizing that LITERALLY the answers we seek are right in front of our eyes. What I’m going to cover in this article is the TOP SECRET, magical formula to break through in ANY MLM business… (so hopefully, you can get your butt to work)
It Starts With A Burning Desire…ee
Absolutely at the core foundation of this industry is the SIZE and power of your vision. People who have a dream and a desire that is BIG enough will do whatever it takes, whenever it takes, no matter how long or how many hours they need to work – and people who DO NOT have a dream or desire will never put in the amount of energy, work, and passion that it really takes to build a thriving, prosperous organization.
I challenge you to question yourself, and ask the HONEST question – is your DESIRE for great wealth strong enough, that you will fight in the face of adversity, challenge negative emotions, and press through rejection and frustration with the ENERGY that you must to reach your desired lifestyle?
If not, you may have to be beaten down by life until you reach a point so low that finally, you make an internal decision where you stand up and say ‘ENOUGH is ENOUGH’ and decide that you are going to make something happen.
About 18 months ago, that is EXACTLY what happened to me – I was living in a green, 1996 Dodge Caravan on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, and a stupid police officer wrote me a ticket for my last $35 for being homeless, and at THAT MOMENT, I knew that something in life had to change, and I started painting the vision that I live inside today. The #1 most important SECRET in the MLM industry is to TRULY make a decision.
Start With What You’ve GOT NOW, Not With Comparisons To Others…
The second part of the MLM Success Formula is that you CANNOT grow a business like someone else who has a dramatically different level of resources, you have to START with what you have available NOW – and the most important part of that statement is ‘START’.
What do I mean?
Well let’s take myself as one example – when I got started in my original business in September of 2009, I could have very easily fallen into the ‘expert’ trap and tried to build my business like Mike Dillard, Jonathan Budd, or Randy Gage – but there was a massive problem with that – THEY had massive financial resources, I didn’t.
If you’ve got $200 left in your life, total, it’s a bit difficult to run a business like someone who has $2,000,000 of disposable income. The fact is, the SMARTEST, fastest way for YOU to build a business is to use the resources that you have available to you RIGHT NOW, and be willing to be honest about it.
When I got started, I had only a few things – about $200, a wife who was willing to work a menial job to support our business growth, parents who were willing to help us get into a business when I asked, (I paid them back), a list of about 500 warm market contacts, an incredible creative spirit, and every waking moment of every day.
THAT was all I needed. I didn’t have money to buy the latest course (they’re mostly useless anyways), I didn’t have an email list, and I didn’t have a cell phone – I just had a burning desire, a list of contacts, and a willingness to do whatever it takes. The second MLM Success Secret is to START with whatever you’ve got.
Exposure Is Everything
A lot of times, gurus in this industry make sponsoring people WAY too complicated, cumbersome, and filled with mystery. Let me give it to you in the simplest, most direct route possible – WHOEVER has the most exposure wins, every time. (As long as the message is powerful)
What do I mean? Well, in the last year, I’ve had over 1,000,000 people see my videos – whether it’s on YouTube, this blog, or my generic MLM funnel. In addition to that, last week I had over 5,000 copies of a CD that I created moved into the marketplace, and at any given moment, I might have 200 presentations going on in my team for my primary MLM company.
On top of that, I actually am one of these people that talks to his friends and family, connects with people when I’m on an airplane, and helps his downline do presentations and 3 way calls.
CREATE exposure at whatever level you can, and it STARTS with what you’ve got – don’t beat yourself up if you don’t have my level of resources to start – BEGIN with whatever you have now, and let’s move it forward, piece by simple piece.
START with a simple act of committing that EVERY DAY, you will expose 3 new prospects to your business (or more), and grow it from there. MLM Success Secret #3 is that EXPOSURE is EVERYTHING.
MLM Is An Industry Of The Masses, Marketing Is A Business Of The Few
The next MLM Success concept that I wanted to cover in this article is the difference between MLM and direct response marketing – and WHY this concept is important to the longevity and growth of your business.
I often talk about the difference between online and offline marketing in the MLM business, and how online marketing doesn’t duplicate, and will always have problems. I should CLARIFY that direct response marketing doesn’t duplicate – on or off the internet unless you have systems and tools in place that someone can use to enroll reps with absolutely no learning curve.
What do I mean? It goes back to the concept of starting with what you’ve got – not with what someone else has. Think about your business from a bird’s eye view, a thousand miles up looking down, and what do you see?
Thousands of people, 98% of whom have never, ever ran even a traditional business, trying to succeed in Free Enterprise, maybe for the first time in their lives, and most of them have very little spendable income, only have part time hours, have family’s to support, but are willing to do what it takes.
What most people online do, is try and get EVERYONE to learn to be a full time, 18 hour a day direct response marketing god, and there is just one problem with that…
…none of their team outside of 2% even have the ability to do that RIGHT NOW (when they start), so the act of trying to get people to build a business destroys the ability of an organization to grow past a small level of personal production.
Make sense?
It’s not that people can’t learn it – it’s that THE MASSES don’t have the time, energy, and money RIGHT NOW to do it, they’ve got to start by making $500 per month, graduate to $5,000, and THEN they can fire their stupid boss and learn to be a guru if they want to turn it into $100,000 per month.
I’m going to leave it there with one story – I have had over my career in this industry what I call ‘levels’ of breakthroughs – one layer of a new concept on top of another that has begun to paint a picture that there was no way I could see when I started, and my biggest breakthrough came when I discovered that direct response marketing doesn’t, and can’t duplicate – and that I really like the MLM business as a long term model BETTER than I like direct response.
It caused a shift in thinking, and simultaneously such a dramatic level of increased production that I was able to hit the top level in my MLM company by shifting my methodology just a little bit to INCLUDE those who are part time in MLM, and it changed my life.

Do not do that mistake that is very current and very big :
Give up too soon on your ad campaigns.
If not enough leads during some time, be patient, and look what it is that worked to bring you the few leads that you got,
See this one thing that you can make better, use it and keep doing that weekly.
Optimize continually.
That’s how you create massively successful campaigns.

When you know you are speaking to, you are going to tell them the same consistent message all the way along your marketing process: your capture page, your sites, your media pages, etc...

So do this exercise, explained in the video, and keep this detailed portrait of your ideal prospect on your desk when you build your marketing campaigns. When you write the e-mails to them, when you record your video-messages, anytime you need to speak or reply to a potential or actual customer. Know his wants, his problems, his desires, so you know what to answer , what to offer that is really responding to his needs. That’s your best way to make sales. And make sales is the purpose of your work of marketing.

STOP THINKING and DO IT :
When I started to work online, I did not know how tricky this road would be, much more than off-line business which I was used to. When it comes to make a change in your life, there is a saying that rings so true to any sensitive brain: “What Ever You Focus On – You Will Attract In Your Life”.
This is the introduction to an e-mail that a member of my business and mastermind team is sending to his patients-customers. I found it so true and simple and valuable that I want to share it here with you: thank you to Dr. Kyle Gilmour.
Whether physical, emotional, professional or personal – focus is a key part of state management. (Simply said, state management controls how we perceive and react to any situation).
In order to change focus and manage your state, there must be daily rituals.
Here are 4 of my TOP FAVORITE RITUALS that have helped transform my life, starting with my day:
1. Exercise. Everybody knows that exercise stimulates the release of “feel good” chemicals such as endorphins. Exercise relaxes the body and reduces stress allowing you to clearly focus on that which you want to achieve.
2. Nutrition. Start the day off with a protein shake after your workout, a fish oil supplement and a healthy breakfast which includes fruits, fresh juices and fiber.
3. Threshold Rules. I learned from Tony Robbins years ago – you must create a “personal code of conduct” or” guidelines” on how you would want conduct your life. These threshold rules allow me to avoid vices and focus on my virtues. These would include guidelines on nutrition, exercise, drinking habits, personal development, family time vs. work balance etc.
4. Positive Mindset. I start every day with 10-15 minutes of morning meditation – to manifest that which I want in my day. Never allow anything negative – such as news, people, or events to influence your emotional state. I’m a firm believer that “he who controls his emotional state over people and events…WINS”.

Kyle, my friend, mentor, and fellow author Matthew Kelly talks about the need to balance four things to achieve The Rhythm of Life. I’ve switched the order, and use the acronym PIES: Physical, Intellectual, Emotional, and Spiritual. Matthew talks about the “classroom of silence”, I create that classroom by walking my dog(s) first thing in the morning (usually at 6 am), or as I did this morning, exercising. This takes care of my spiritual balance, and handles most of the physical as well. Intellectual I get from my Plan A work, like the workshop I just gave to 250 folks here in Indiana, and surprisingly for me, one of the hidden benefits of WV and this team. Emotional balance is discovered as we come to grips with our past, while living in the present and dreaming about the future. I bought a ticket to see Dr. Wayne Dyer on one of his personal development and motivation tours when promoting his book, “The Power of Intention.” I drove 7 hours to Seattle, WA from where I live here in Oregon. I sat with people I didn’t know because none of my friends wanted to go with me.
I listened to Dr. Dyer’s 2-hour opening speech in awe. I spent the day going through the journal he gave to the participants – as he encouraged us to face our own “stuff” and get clear about our lives. I answered every single item honestly and with as much vision as I could muster.
I drove back home on a “Hope High” that I thought would never go away.
I’m sure you know what happened.
About…. oh, 3 hours into the very next day, I was face to face with “reality.” My old thought habits came back to crush my new “Hope” High. I was face to face with my life, my money problems, and all the “stuff” my current mindsets had created for me. (Where was Dr. Dyer when I really needed him?)
The cynical among us would have us believe that my day with Dr. Dyer (or your day in a similar situation) was bullsh*t. That I was only momentarily distracted from the practical reality of my life. Disillusioned. Duped. Dumb.
Here’s the thing though:
I recently found that old journal that Dr. Dyer gave me 5 years ago. Everything… (everything!) I wrote in there has come to pass. And during these 5 years, I’ve gone to other cool events, read uplifting books, and talked face to face with people who inspired me to no end. Again and again, I’ve gotten lost in the pure potential of possibility. And of course – I’ve had the old crummy thought habits come up the very next day trying to convince me that the possibilities I saw for myself were just pipe dreams.
But I’ve come to see the pipe dream (and the hope high differently) now. After that day, I began to ask myself one very un-cynical question that changed it all:
What if that HOPE, that HIGH, that inspiration I felt was the TRUTH? What if that was the REAL ME – and all this other icky stuff is the BS?
Think about it. From the day we’re born, we’re taught that the cynicism and doubt are “smart.” We use them as a protective shield. We ward off the hope, the dream – and we successfully keep ourselves stuck.
Still, we get these amazing glimpses of ourselves, of what’s possible. We also get these fantastic ideas and opportunities. We see our greatness as if it’s standing right in front of us. Sometimes other people or big events help us see it. Sometimes it’s a book. Sometimes it’s just a moment of pure living in the present moment.
If you’re like most people (and me), it’s easy to crush that hope the minute the voices of “reality” set in.
It is imperative that you learn to trust that hope. Here are five things I’ve learned since that day with Dr. Dyer. They are true even now as I keep on expanding and changing into even bigger dreams. Let them guide you through the new hopes AND the old habits!
1 – It’s much easier to stop trying than it is to keep believing.
It’s so easy to just believe the old habit voices that whine, criticize and shame. Why? Well – let’s be honest – cuz then we don’t have to DO anything!
2 – The Pipe Dream and the Hope are part of the process.
But, so are the moments when our thoughts make something much worse than it is…so just realize they are thoughts…lay them aside and do the work.
Without the dream, you’d never get started. Without the work, you’ll never get anywhere. (And yes, the work is sometimes slow, boring, clean-up work.)
3 – Expecting to feel inspired and happy 100% of the time is the real pipe dream.
I’m a huge believer in Martha Beck’s “shackles on/shackles off” approach.
AND, in my own experience, much of what I thought was a “shackles on/doesn’t feel good” experience – was my assumption about that experience. In fact, sometimes just getting something done or being proud of myself was the “feel good” I was looking for! When I expect inspiration and happiness to constantly be there before I do anything, then I set myself up for staying stuck.
4 – There’s a connection between discomfort and happiness.
We imagine that true happiness is hanging out by a pool sipping froo-froo drinks. While that can indeed be fun – it will eventually get boring. Our souls have more in mind for us than froo-froo drinks. Our souls have more in mind for us than protecting us from failure. Time and time again, I’ve found myself in a stuck place and even move into deep places of discomfort (and then success). Now, I’ve revised what I say to myself when I feel off-balance, “This is the most uncomfortable I’ve been in a long time – but I am so happy and alive! It’s way better than being Stuck!”
5 – Make time for more hope.
Feed your hope, I do this by focusing my thoughts on how I want to BE, In This Moment. Feed your vision, I’ve created a vision board and vision journals for when I travel. Read books that inspire. Hang out with people who believe in you. Make time in each day to tap back into that place of hope and vision. This will act as navigation and keep you moving in the right direction. I am on the same journey as you are…together…it can be the most exciting adventure of our lives….taking it just one day at a time. Now that’s worth a few exclamation points!!!
